Agreed, the situation is definitely nuanced. I just worry that the definition of Data Science varies wildly from university to university results in little parity between courses at each university. I feel like the value of more established degrees (computer science, math and sciences) is more known whereas doing a degree in Data Science likely faces much more uncertain outcomes based on the university you attend. On top of this it seems like most employers don't even understand what data science is and aren't able to distinguish it from a data analyst role which also questions the value of the degree to employers.
